So this is my first attempt at a blog. I've considered doing one for some time, but never really found a topic I really wanted to spend significant time commenting about outside my StumbleUpon and Facebook profiles. Well, here it is--I have been interested in the idea of Coolhunting--"[making] observations and predictions in changes of new or existing cultural trends," according to Wikipedia--ever since reading William Gibson's Pattern Recognition towards the end of my college career. (A great casual read; I strongly recommend it, especially if you find yourself fascinated by the inner world of marketing and advertising in the contemporary age.)
Additionally, I've had an strong obsession history for as long as I can remember. the very first thing I wanted to be when I grew up was an archaeologist; after watching Raiders of the Lost Ark in second grade I purchased every Eyewitness Book I could find on the subject. As I grew up, I became more interested in the pop culture of the times--those allegorical, photo-caption moments that might be several steps removed from the main historical timeline, but could be traced to a changing mindset, an interesting new trend, or just an intriguing glimpse of the cultural mindset.
Over the course of this blog, I aim to provide examples of all of these things. If all of this sounds too academic, I'm essentially creating a list of things I would love to buy for my theoretical mansion with my theoretical billions and why for my own personal amusement. Hopefully some of it will amuse you too.
Cheers, and enjoy!
